Hi.

The MP2639A supports buck discharge output of 5V @ 5A. This would be a great additional feature to add to my build while I am interested in improving my charging circuit, however not the primary feature.

I am building a device which draws about a ~resistive 10~15A @ 8.4V from a 2-Cell Li-Po pack in short bursts of about 5 seconds, about 20 times a day.

I have not seen specific references to how the MP2639A behaves while charging during load current directly to the battery pack and would appreciate any discussion on this kind of 'parasitic' load.

I hope it would continue providing the limited charge current which would just go to the load and reduce the battery current by Ichg. If necessary, I could either momentarily disable charging or prevent the direct current draw while charging.

I already have separate circuitry for overcurrent/undervoltage/overvoltage with low side switches. I assume the MP2639A would need to be connected directly to the cells -,mid,+ for proper balancing to work which is also a desired feature. This would circumvent my existing protection (the rest of my circuit will still be protected by my current BMS) and may present a ground difference for control logic interface with the MP2639A. This would not be an issue if the MP2639A can continue to charge during the load and won't need any logic interfacing.

Any suggestions, pointers or discussion is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Russell,

If the device is drawing 10~15A of current directly from the battery. The current being drawn will be the combination of both battery and charge current from MP2639A. The charge current depends on the voltage of the battery. With such high current, majority of the current would be supplied by the battery.

For example, if the battery is being drawn to a low voltage state, the MP2639A will operate and supply the current at trickle charge mode.

Thanks,

Kevin
